Eliza Orzeszkowa (pen names E.O., Gabriela Litwinka, Li...ka) is a significant Polish novelist of the nineteenth century. She was born on the 6th of June 1841 in Milkowszczyzna near Grodno (today's Belarus). Her father Benedykt Pawłowski and her sister Klementyna died when she was very young, her mother remarried, and Orzeszkowa was raised and influenced by her maternal grandmother Elżbieta Kamienska. Between 1852–57 Eliza was a student at a boarding school maintained by nuns of the Order of the Blessed Sacrament in Warsaw. There she met and befriended Maria Konopnicka, another future Positivist writer and poet.
