Mohammed Hanif is a multilingual writer, novelist, journalist, and opera librettist born in 1964 in Okara, Pakistan, to a family of Punjabi farmers. In an interview with

The Nation

, he stated that “the only book in the house was a copy of the Koran” (2016). Hanif is an original and respected voice in contemporary Pakistani fiction—firstly, thanks to his attention to the literary form of his writing, which is deeply satirical, irreverent, and displays a playful use of the norms of realistic fiction, and secondly, as a politically committed journalist his op-eds and columns in home and international newspapers, in Punjabi, Urdu, and English, make him one of Pakistan’s most vocal champions of human rights.

Hanif’s first language was Punjabi, then, as a teenager, he learned Urdu
