– a newspaper that has thrice won the International Press Institute’s India Award for Excellence in Journalism – and an award-winning author. His literary work is characterised by a playful magic-realist style, which is used to serious effect in order to “speak the unspeakable” (a phrase that crops up in two of his novels). In this manner, Jha unflinchingly gives voice to some of the unspoken social ills of contemporary India, with themes of child abuse, abject poverty and communal violence frequently cropping up in his work.
