José Luis Alonso de Santos (Valladolid, Spain, 1942) has been a leading playwright in Spanish theatre since the time of Spain’s democratic transition. His first play,
¡Viva el Duque, nuestro dueño!, debuted just prior to the death of General Francisco Franco (1975). With
Bajarse al moro(1985), Alonso de Santos rose to the top of Madrid’s “new comedy”, part and parcel of the countercultural movement known as “La Movida”.
