David Storey (1933-2017) was the author of eleven novels, fifteen plays, a poetry collection, a short humorous fiction, and a posthumously published memoir; he was also a talented painter. His writing often focuses on male protagonists of working-class origin in or from the North of England, and combines social realism, solidly rooted in specific characters and environments, with symbolist, allegorical, and absurdist elements.
