Charlotte Mary Yonge was born on August 11, 1823. Her father, William Crawley Yonge (1795- 1854), was the seventh child of a Devonshire clergymen, himself a younger son in a family with landed property at Puslinch, near Plymouth. William Yonge joined the army as an officer and fought at Waterloo, and then became engaged to Frances Mary Bargus (1795-1868), of Otterbourne, several of whose connections were already married to his own relations. Frances Bargus’s mother made it a condition of his marriage to her daughter that he retire on half-pay, and the couple were married in October 1822. They then lived for the rest of their lives on a small landed property which Mrs Bargus had recently bought in the village of Otterbourne in Hampshire, on the main road between Winchester and…
