Herbert Rowland

I am currently an Emeritus Professor of German at Purdue University, where I taught and conducted research for 27 years. My original scholarship has focused primarily on eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century German literature and includes a dissertation on C. M. Wieland and three books on Matthias Claudius as well as as some three dozen articles on these and other writers such as Lessing, Goethe, and Eichendorff. I have also published a book and several articles on Hans Christian Andersen, principally on the American reception of his work in the nineteenth century. More recently, I have begun to write on Heinrich Böll. My current projects include a book on the reception of G. E. Lessing in nineteenth-century America, a followup to my study of the American Andersen-reception in the same period, and a volume on Horace E. Scudder, Andersen's chief advocate in the U. S. and an important literary figure of his time in his own right. I also intend to pursue my study of Böll and other writers of the 1940s and 1950s in Germany.
