Nicolino Applauso

Nicolino Applauso is a the Director of the Foreign Language Lab and Media Center in the Department of World Languages and International Studies at Morgan State University (where he also teaches Italian, Latin, and Spanish language courses). Professor Applauso received a PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures in 2010 from the University of Oregon and specializes in Dante and medieval invective poetry as well as contemporary Italian history and culture. He has published several studies in relation to medieval and modern Italian history, literature, and culture. More recently he published a book on Dante and medieval comic Italian literature [Dante’s Comedy and the Ethics of Invective in Medieval Italy: Humor and Evil] and a co-edited volume with Fabian Alfie on Dante and satire [Dante satiro: Satire in Dante Alighieri’s Comedy and Other Works]. With Mario Mignone is the co-author of the 4th edition of Italy Today: Changes and Challenges in the 21st Century after the Global Financial Crisis (forthcoming in 2023). He is also completing a monograph on the history of Italians in Baltimore and Maryland from the Colonial Era to our modern days. Professor Applauso has been teaching Italian, Latin and Spanish language courses at the university level as well Italian history, literature, and cinema courses at various universities across the U.S.A. He is regularly invited to lecture in Italy, Europe, and in the U.S. sponsored by various Italian and U.S. universities. His research has been published in the U.S., Italy, England, Germany, and in the Netherlands. His main research interests pertain to Dante and Medieval Studies, political satire, as well as contemporary Italian history and music, ethics, and politics.
