John William Coulter was born in Belfast, Ireland, of Protestant (Wesleyan) parents, Francis and Annie (Clements). He was tall, patriarchal and seemingly severe, once even describing himself as an “Irish Wolfhound”, but, in retrospect, this shy and sensitive romantic was somewhat sadly deprived of the total recognition he deserved for penning at least twenty-five plays, the libretti for two operas, a biography of Winston Churchill, a book of poetry, one short novel, two major autobiographical works, nine short stories and innumerable articles, essays and broadcasts for both the BBC in Belfast and London, and the CBC in Canada.
Schooled in Art and Technology courses, Coulter won a research scholarship to Manchester University which led to a teaching career in Art and English, first in
