In the course of a literary career which lasted, albeit with one protracted interruption, over fifty years, Dmitrii Grigorovich turned his hand to a wide variety of prose genres: short stories, novels, plays, translations, memoirs and travel writing. His complete fiction, published in 1896, runs to ten volumes. He was also a prolific writer of letters, corresponding with many of the literary figures of the day, including Turgenev, Fet, Polonsky and, famously, Anton Chekhov.
He was born on 19th March (31st March, New Style) 1822 at Nikol'skoe, outside Simbirsk, the estate of the writer Count V.A. Sollogub. His father, Vasilii Il'ich, was a retired army major of Ukrainian origin, who now worked as steward on the Sollogub estate. In 1820 he had married a Frenchwoman Sidoniia (Sidonie) who
