Tiutchev [Tyutchev] was born on 23 November 1803 at Ovstug, in the Briansk district of Orel province. His family were landed nobility and the young Tiutchev was privately educated. His tutor from 1812 was the poet and translator S. E. Raich, the future translator of Ariosto and Tasso, who inculcated into his pupil a deep love of the classics, especially the work of Horace. In February 1818, Tiutchev’s poem “Vel’mozha. Podrazhanie Goratsiiu” [“The Grandee. An Imitation of Horace”, now known as “On the New Year 1816”] was read by the poet and academic A. F. Merzliakov at the Society of Lovers of Russian Literature. The following month Tiutchev was elected as a member of the society.
