The first Mexican-American writer in English, Maria Amparo Ruiz Arango, was born in Loreto (or La Paz), Baja California, on 3 July 1832 – a few years before the state of Texas achieved complete independence from Mexico in 1836. Ruiz de Burton was the granddaughter of Don José Manuel Ruiz, who had been the founder of Ensenada, commander and later governor of the Baja California Mexican Northern frontier (1822-1825). Her uncle, Captain Francisco Maria Ruiz, had been the San Diego jail commander (1801-13 and 1817-18), and her mother was related to some Californian families of great social prestige, including the Carrillo family, among others. A sense of pride and an indirect reflection of her aristocratic and socially prestigious family can be inferred in Ruiz de Burton’s writings.
