Alain Bosquet (né Anatole Bisk) was born in Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine) on 28 March 1919 to parents of Russian, Belgian and Jewish descent. Through a large and extremely varied

, he played a significant role in the post-war French literary scene for over fifty years. His diversity is demonstrated by his professional activities – as a novelist, autobiographer, poet, critic, literary editor and radio presenter. If asked, however, he would have stated that he was a poet first and that the other roles were secondary, serving to fill the time between periods of poetic inspiration.
