i) Biographical introduction

Guillaume Dustan was born William Baranès in November 1965 into a middle-class French Jewish family. After studying at the prestigious Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris (“Sciences-Po”) and subsequently at the élite management training school for high-ranking civil servants, the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (1988 cohort), Baranès worked as a magistrate in the French administrative court system until 1996, when writer Guillaume Dustan emerged with the publication of his first book, Dans ma chambre. The contrast could hardly be more stark between the high-powered but somewhat fusty establishment environment inhabited by Baranès and the democratic gay subculture or scene, “le ghetto”, as he often calls it, which he chronicles and
