Eunice de Souza was one of the leading modern Indian poets writing in English and one of the finest post-Independence women poets. De Souza was born to Roman Catholic parents of Goan origin and grew up in a conservative environment in Poona. Educated in USA and India, de Souza holds a doctoral degree in English Literature from the University of Mumbai. She taught at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai for three decades, and retired as Professor and Head of the English Department.

Eunice de Souza began writing poetry at the age of thirty and published five critically acclaimed volumes of poetry: Fix (1979), Women in Dutch Painting (1988), Ways of Belonging: Selected Poems (1990) – which received a Poetry Book Society Recommendation – Selected and New Poems (1994), and A Necklace of Skulls
