movement in Latin American poetry, and a significant contributor to the development of literary journalism. Although he only lived to the age of 49, Darío was extremely productive in his writing, leaving an indelible mark on Latin American Literature.

Félix Rubén García Sarmiento was born in the small provincial town of Metapa, Nicaragua on Jan. 18, 1867, a city now called Ciudad Darío. His parents, Manuel García and mother, Rosa Sarmiento had a marriage of convenience and soon separated. There has been much speculation about Darío’s racial origins, largely fueled by his own writings about a Spanish grandfather and distant African and Native-American descendents.
