Zinovii Gluzberg (pen name Zinovy Zinik) was born in Moscow in 1945. He studied art and geometrical topology at Moscow University, whilst publishing theatre reviews and participating in

samizdat

literary circles. He left Russia in 1975 for Israel, where he directed a student theatre group, before moving to Paris for a few months, where his first novels were published in French. Since 1976 he has lived in London, writing for several magazines and newspapers including the

The Listener

,

The Guardian

and

The Independent

, as well as hosting a weekly radio programme, “West End”, on the BBC’s Russian Service. He is widely translated into a number of European languages and his novel
