Had Gilbert Emery focused his talents in one area, he might be better known today. He began as a promising poet and short story writer, then turned to playwriting and gained considerable recognition for two provocative full-length plays of the 1920s, after which he largely abandoned writing in favor of a career as an actor of supporting roles in films. His reputation is further complicated by the fact that he published his early work as Emery Pottle and his work after 1920 as Gilbert Emery, although the latter name was also that of a British stage and film actor who lived from 1883 to 1935.

Gilbert Emery Bemsley Pottle was born in Naples, New York, on 11 June 1875, the son of William and Harriette Pottle. His birth name derived from his mother's maiden name (Gilbert) and from Emory [sic]
