Nino Martoglio is universally acclaimed in Sicily as a figure larger than life. He excelled in many areas, and when he died at the age of fifty he was one of the most famous Sicilians of his time. His reputation was based primarily on his work as a promoter of Sicilian-language poetry and theatre, as a theatrical entrepreneur, and as a playwright and poet.
Martoglio was born in Belpasso, a small town about fifteen kilometers from Catania, on December 3, 1870. His father, Luigi, was a teacher and a journalist. His mother, Vincenza Zappalà Aradas, was an elementary school teacher. His parents separated when Nino was very young.
