Natalia Ginzburg is one of the most important Italian writers of the second half of the twentieth century. She authored several novels, essays, plays and short stories and developed a special way of writing which combines tragedy with humour and uses simple, common language. She dealt with her material from the everyday perspective of the individual, and viewed the horrific events of World War II through the detailed account of family life and household routine. As the critic Pietro Citati states:
