Andrea di Jacopo di Tieri de’ Magnabotti from Barberino in Val d’Elsa, Tuscany, was the most prolific compiler of chivalric epic romances in late medieval Italy. A self-described

cantatore

(“singer of tales”), maestro Andrea should not be confused with the itinerant minstrels of earlier centuries. Extant tax documents show that he owned a house in the Santo Spirito district of Florence and also held several different pieces of farmland in the countryside near Settimo. He was widowed twice, and a third wife was still alive in 1430. No children survived from these marriages. He was at least 60 years old when he died.
