David Eggleton has been primarily a performance poet. Not having witnessed any of his performances, one seeks to do him justice from having read the printed texts of his poems. And many of these, especially among those written more recently, do read well anyway. He has also been an editor, art critic, reviewer, miscellaneous writer, and freelance journalist. Self-styled in his earlier years as “the mad Kiwi ranter” for his high-energy delivery of many of his poems, and for their style, he has since earned considerable prestige for his poetry, in many modes, and for his other writings.

His accolades include the following: in 1985, London’s Time Out’s Street Poet of the Year award; in 1987, the PEN Best First Book of Poetry Award, for South Pacific Sunrise (1986; in 1990, the Robert
