Farrukh Dhondy was born in Poona, India in 1944 in a Parsi family. His father retired as a Colonel in the Indian Army and so was posted to various parts of India through Dhondy's childhood and youth. His mother raised her three children – Farrukh Dhondy who is the eldest and his two younger sisters – while following her husband on his army postings, and in consequence Farrukh Dhondy lodged with his grandfather in Poona whilst going to school and college. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the Poona University in 1964 and soon after was awarded a scholarship to read English at Cambridge from whence he moved to Leicester University for his Master's degree. He has been living in England since 1964.
