Tasos Athanasiadis was born at Salihli in Asia Minor (near Sardis in ancient Lydia) on 1 November 1913. His father, Michael Athanasiadis, originated from Epirus and had banking and commercial enterprises in Salihli. His mother Anthi, née Panayotopoulou, was born in Magnesia on Sipylos. His parents had four children: three girls, Stasa, Aleka and Kallirrhoe, and one boy, Tasos, born last. His father had one other son, from his first marriage, whom he had sent to Greece to serve in the Army. Salihli, where Tasos lived the first nine years of his life, was a pleasant town that had been founded some time before 1850, since Flaubert mentions it on his journey to Sardis; Athanasiadis begins the first volume of his last novel,
