Ingrid de Kok’s poetry explores, in the context of her native South Africa and beyond, the constantly shifting terrain on which identity, memory and interpersonal relations are built, as well as the processes according to which each is necessarily recalibrated over time. Exquisitely crafted and quietly restrained—no matter how shattering or exhilarating the subject matter— her poems are attuned to the intricate connections between affective, intimate dimensions of experience and the broader sociopolitical resonances of loss, longing, cautious hope and the painstaking work of transformation.
De Kok was born on 4 June, 1951 in Johannesburg, and raised in Stilfontein, a gold mining town in the former Transvaal. She traveled overseas on various scholarships, and lived in Canada from
