The long life span and rich and varied publication record of Lucrezia Marinella situate her at the apex of the creative itinerary shared by women writers in Italy in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and seventeenth centuries. She published over a dozen works in prose and poetry and annotated a male-authored religiously themed poem; she was very prolific and covered many of the canonical genres of the time. Concurrently, she had an interesting life, typical in some aspects and unconventional in others; because of its sheer length, Marinella lived through a variety of cultural and literary periods.
Marinella was born in Venice in 1571 to the physician, natural philosopher, and published author Giovanni Marinelli, whose family hailed from Modena (from 1598 the seat of the Este duchy). Although not
