Born on June 1, 1956 in Bucharest, Mircea Cărtărescu has published poetry, short stories, novels, and essays, all so well received by Romanian and European criticism and, recently, by the large public, that in Romania his name is surrounded by a veritable mythical aura, which, over time, has led to high honors, but also contestation from within the literary world.

Cărtărescu’s literary productivity has been, from early on, quite impressive. Even under the drastic publishing constraints of the 1980s, Cărtărescu managed to make his debut with the poetry collection Faruri, Vitrine, Fotografii (Headlights, Shop Windows, Photographs, 1980), followed by Aer cu diamante (Air with Diamonds, 1982), a collectively-authored volume, Poeme de amor (Love Poems, 1983) and Totul (Everything,
