The Austrian writer Peter Rosegger is a major representative of the regional literature of German-speaking lands, known as
Heimatliteratur(homeland literature), or more generally
Heimatkunst(homeland art).
Heimatstories are also known as
Kalender-(calendar) or
Dorf-(village)
geschichten.Rosegger wrote essays, folk plays and volumes of poetry, but is best known for his narrative prose. In dozens of volumes of lively and detailed stories, novels and memoirs, some written in the dialect of his native Styria, he extols the beauties of Alpine forest landscapes, documents the customs, eccentricities, and way of life of the rural Styrian folk, and expresses his personal Catholic values and resistance to urbanization, materialism, and economic changes.
