Milovan Djilas was born on 12 June 1911 in the village of Pobišće along the Albanian border in the Kingdom of Montenegro into a peasant family. As revealed in the first and most literary volume of his autobiography,

Land without Justice

(1958), his early childhood was war torn by the Balkan Wars (1912-1913) and World War I (1914-1918) and embroiled by the violence and folklore of the Montenegrin and Albanian mountains. He completed elementary school in Pobišće and secondary school in Kološine and Berane, Montenegro.

Djilas initially aspired to be a writer; between 1929-1932 he attended Belgrade University in the faculty of philology to study literature. With works such as Land without Justice, Montenegro (1962), The Leper and Other Stories (1964), Njegoš: Poet, Prince, Bishop
