The German writer Rolf Hochhuth holds a peculiar position in cultural history. By some measures, he is one of the most successful dramatists of modern times, a literary figure with great import in the real world of history and politics, and a traditional dramatist who brought historical truth, moral principle, and belief in individual responsibility and modern tragedy to a stage dominated by absurdism, “mass man”, and essentially non-dramatic documentary and epic drama.
