Fulvio Tomizza (Giurizzani di Materada 1935 – Trieste 1999) was an important Italian author, born in Istria before the territory became part of Yugoslavia after the Second World War (it is now split between Croatia and Slovenia). His origins in this very particular border region and the dramatic events it experienced are fundamental to an understanding of his works. The fact that people of both Romance and Slavic descent converged on this area over centuries, bringing their respective languages and cultures with them, gave it a complicated social reality; neither ethnic group was large enough to absorb the other, so the different cultures gradually merged into one, each contributing its own linguistic idiom, traditions and superstitions.
