Born in Kiev in 1887 into an ethnically Polish family, Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky studied law and philology at the University of Kiev. His father was a retired officer, later an accountant. The family was reasonably well-off, and as a young man Krzhizhanovsky enjoyed several European holidays, visiting France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. After graduating in 1913, Krzhizhanovsky worked briefly as a barrister’s assistant before embarking on his literary career. From this time on, he published sketches, feuilletons, and travelogues in a variety of minor local periodicals; simultaneously, he gained a reputation as a public lecturer, offering talks on philosophy, drama, poetry, and all aspects of culture.
