Camille Mauclair, a prolific French novelist, poet, biographer, literary and arts critic and travel writer was well known in his lifetime but quickly faded into obscurity following the Second World War. More recently he has come to be appreciated for his accurate portrayal of the fin-de-siècle Parisian artistic milieu, both with his detailed descriptions of its protagonists and his analysis of literary, art and music trends. Whether admiration for Stéphane Mallarmé, Charles Baudelaire, Maurice Maeterlinck, Eugène Delacroix, Auguste Rodin or Robert Schumann, involvement in symbolism, elitism or anarchism, interest in various art forms and philosophies, all these were among Mauclair’s subjects.
