Leandro Fernández de Moratín (1760-1828) was the outstanding dramatist of eighteenth-century Spain, not only because of the enduring audience appeal of his plays, but also due to their critical acclaim and influence on later playwrights. His subsequent literary reputation derives, too, from his achievements as poet, translator of drama and observer of social and cultural life in England and Italy.
Born in Madrid to an intellectual father, Nicolás (1737-1780), who was also a published poet and dramatist, Leandro Moratín did not attend university but gained his literary education from his father’s circle of friends.
