Idris Davies is a figure of importance in the history of modern English-language writing from Wales. An author of prose as well as of verse, the oeuvre he produced in his years of literary activity is remarkable in its scope, extent, and stylistic diversity. By the time of his death he had published four books, and over a hundred other pieces (most of them poems) had appeared in magazines, newspapers, and anthologies. The Complete Poems of Idris Davies(1994), but many more poems – and practically all of his prose – remain unpublished. In the twenty-first century, his literary reputation and cultural cachet rest primarily on two “canonical” poetic sequences –
