The Poet (dating and origin)

One of the most problematic issues in Calpurnian scholarship has to do with the dating of the poet’s life and works. Calpurnius has variously been dated during Domitian’s reign (cf. Ostrand 1984), in the late first century, after Statius (cf. Courtney 1987, 148–57), in the time of Severus Alexander (cf. Champlin 1978, 95–110; 1986, 104–12), in the third century AD (cf. Baldwin 1995, 157–67), or during the end of the third / the fourth century (cf. Chastagnol 1976, 81–2). It has also been suggested that the poet, although of a later date, opts to set his poems in the Neronian period (cf. e.g. Horsfall 1993, 269–70; 1997, 166–96). Since Haupt 1875, 1.358–406, however, the majority of the scholars view Calpurnius as a Neronian poet; moreover,
