Pavel Krusanov, the author of several novels, collections of short prose and editorial projects, is one of the leading contemporary Russian writers. Krusanov first gained wide critical and public attention with his novel

, 1999]. The novel established Krusanov’s reputation as a proponent of imperialist mentality [‘imperets’], a reputation reaffirmed by his affiliation with the “Petersburg Fundamentalists”. This conservative group of writers and philosophers glorifies the imperial spirit of St Petersburg, declares empire as the only political form suitable for Russia, and values the aesthetics of the “grand imperial style of life” over ethical concerns (Krusanov 2005, 11). Krusanov strives to revive what he calls the “profound traditions”…
