Andy Adams was an early 20th century writer of American Western fiction. He focused entirely on the figure of the cowboy and his roles of caring for cattle on the ranch and driving them to markets in the North. Most of these drives began in central or southern Texas and ended in central or southern Kansas, the destination slowly moving further south and west as railroads advanced. Adams’ best known work,
TheLog of a Cowboy, tells the story of a drive from the Rio Grande to the Blackfoot Indian Reservation near Fort Benton, Montana, a distance of around 2200 miles.
Adams was born to Scotch-Irish immigrants on May 3, 1859, on a farm in Whitely County, Indiana. His entire formal education
