Montserrat Roig was a Catalonian feminist novelist and journalist whose fiction explores the relationships among generations of women who came of age during the social and political upheavals at the turn of the twentieth century, the Spanish Civil War, and the Franco dictatorship in Barcelona. During the transition to democracy and regional autonomy in the 1970s, her Catalan-language fiction, journalism, and television interviews were instrumental in the reconstruction of Catalonian culture. In her critical views, Roig did not spare the social and political movements with which she was affiliated: feminism, the anti-Franco left, and Catalan nationalism.
