Viktor Martinovich – the Russian spelling of his name – is a Belarusian prose writer who writes in both Russian and Belarusian. He was born on September 9 1977 in what was then the Belorussian SSR, in the town of Oshmyany (known since independence as Ashmyany), but his parents moved to Minsk within a few months of his birth. After secondary school and Art School, he enrolled in the journalism programme of the Belarusian State University in 1994. Graduating in 1999 and completing postgraduate work in 2002, he then worked on the Belarusian weekly paper
