Laura Fish is the pseudonym of Laura Betton-Rodber; born in 1964 in London of Jamaican and Guyanese parentage, she was bought up by white foster parents. She is a creative writing lecturer at Northumbria University in Northumbria, UK, having been awarded an MA in Creative Writing in 2002, then a PhD in 2007, both from the University of East Anglia. Fish has published two novels to date:

Flight of Black Swans

(1995) and

Strange Music

(2008), a historical novel, the background for which Fish researched as part of her PhD.

Strange Music

was long listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2009, and nominated for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award also in 2009. Fish’s other publications include a contribution to an anthology of writings about adoption and fostering,
