César Aira was born in Coronel Pringles, a town in the south of the Buenos Aires province, in 1949. In 1967 he moved to the city of Buenos Aires to study law but two years later he dropped university, eventually becoming a translator. By 2015, he has published more than eighty books, mostly novels that rarely exceed one hundred pages. He has also published essays on literary criticism, a dictionary of Latin American literature, and a few collections of short stories. Aira’s work has been translated into French, English, Italian, Portuguese, Greek, German, Romanian and Russian. He has received numerous awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship for Creative Arts in 1996 and the Roger Caillois French Literary Prize for Latin American Literature in 2004.
