Mahesh Elkunchwar (1939- ), an Indian writer with more than twenty plays to his credit, became a dramatist quite by chance. Like many college-goers, young Elkunchwar found films far more interesting than plays till the day when, for the first time in his life, he entered a theatre rather reluctantly on not getting a ticket for the movie he had intended to watch that evening. Interestingly, such was the impact of the renowned Marathi dramatist Vijay Tendulkar’s (1928-2008)
Mee Jinkalo, Mee Haralo[
I won, I Lost, 1963] that Elkunchwar decided to become a playwright almost on the spot. And, fortunately for Indian regional drama, he stuck to that sudden decision firmly, despite all other opportunities that came his way.
