Antonio de Nebrija (c. 1444- 1522), a Spanish humanist, grammarian, and philologist of the Renaissance, was born Antonio Martínez de Cala y Xarana in Lebrija, in the province of Seville. He was one of five children of Juan Martínez de Cala e Hinojosa and Catalina de Xarana y Ojo. Antonio would Latinize his birth name after returning to Spain from his studies in Italy, at times adding the Roman name

Aelius

(Elio) and using, in place of a patronymic, the ancient topographical name for his birthplace,

Nebrissensis

(Nebrija).
