Vera Nikolaevna Bunina (née Muromtseva, 1881-1961) is probably better known as a wife of Ivan Bunin (1870-1953), the first Russian Nobel Prize Laureate in Literature (1933). She was, however, an author in her own right, even though her creativity was notably linked to the most difficult periods of her life as Bunin’s lover, wife and widow.

Vera Muromtseva was born in Moscow to a noble Russian family that traced its history to XVII century and believed to originate from the town of Murom, immortalised in folklore by Ilya Muromets, a hero of many East Slavonic epic poems. Muromtseva’s father, an engineer by training, played an active role in Moscow local governing bodies, but the family member best known to the nation was her uncle Sergei Muromtsev (1850-1910), a lawyer, scholar,
