Bohdan Ihor Antonych (1909–1937) was one of the most remarkable Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century, who left an extraordinary literary legacy with just a handful of published books. He was also a literary critic, translator, and journalist. His formal education, at the gymnasium in Sanok and at Lviv University (1928-34), was conducted exclusively in Polish. At home he spoke Lemko, an East Slavic dialect customarily grouped with Ukrainian, but distinctly different from the literary language. As for literary Ukrainian, which became the language of his writing, Antonych began to learn it relatively late as a teenager at the gymnasium.
