Mauricio Rosencof (1933, Uruguay) is a well-known figure in Uruguay, who has distinguished himself as a versatile writer and journalist while also playing an important role as a leader of the National Liberation Movement (MLN), more commonly known as the “Tupamaros”, in the 1960s. His political activism led him to be arrested and tortured under the government of Bordaberry in May of 1972, the year before the coup that installed the 1973-1985 civil-military dictatorship. Starting in 1973 he was declared a political “hostage” (along with eight other Tupamaro leaders) and spent the following twelve years of military rule imprisoned in solitary confinement under truly inhumane conditions.
