Ana García Bergua (b. 1960) is a short story writer and novelist. She contributes to literary journals, such as
Letras Libres,and has a regular column in the Mexican national newspaper
La Jornada,“Y ahora paso a retirarme” [“and now I’ll step away”]. In 2001 García Bergua was inducted into the
Sistema Nacional de Creadoresde Arte[National System of Art Creators], a government-funded board established to support creative artists, understood broadly. The title of her column gives a sense of her character. She has a quietly confident presence with a playful sense of the absurd. There is also a strong strand of engagement with social justice and a keen eye for cultural and political critique evident in her writing.
