Author of what is considered to be the first Brazilian novel,
O Filho do Pescador[
The Fisherman’s Son], of 1843, Antônio Gonçalves Teixeira e Sousa was a Romantic novelist, poet and playwright, whose literary achievements, in the view of most twentieth-century literary critics, have little value beyond the historic (note 1). Recent studies, however, have demonstrated a shift towards greater appreciation of this author’s involvement in the development of the Brazilian literary scene during the first half of the nineteenth century.
Born on 28th March 1812, the mixed-race son of Portuguese merchant Manuel Gonçalves and his Afro-Brazilian partner, Ana Teixeira de Jesus, Teixeira e Sousa enjoyed a relatively stable early life with his parents and five siblings in his home town of Cabo
