Popularly regarded as the first woman writer in Polish literature, Anna Stanisławska is the author of a unique autobiographical epic poem that recounts her life from the time of her birth up until the death of her third husband. Entitled
Transakcyja albo Opisanie całego życia jednej sieroty przez żałosne treny od tejże samej pisane roku 1685[A Transaction, or an Account of the Life of an Orphan Girl by Way of Plaintful Threnodies Written in the Year 1685], it consists of 654 eight-line stanzas written in octosyllabic rhyming couplets. The whole is divided into 77 threnodies of differing length, bookended by an opening and a closing poem addressed to the reader.
